We are in historic (yet exciting) times. The first round of votes on the Economic Rescue & Bailout Plan (created and voted on during a Mercury retrograde!) failed in Congress. This shifts the U.S. economy into a new phase, one in which no one knows the outcome. President Bush tried to hide our economic emergency until he was out of office, but it has exploded into a full-blown meltdown and global crisis. Other countries knew this was coming but most Americans were kept in the dark trusting Wall St., the banks, and corporations ruling our lives.
Robbery
Michael Moore says it’s the biggest robbery in the history of the world. Stolen is a half trillion with 300 million hostages (us). The government, soon leaving office, is swiping the silverware (U.S. Treasury) as they go out the door. Moore, blunt as usual, hits the nail squarely on the head. Outcome: Shock and awe is achieving dominance - creating fear, danger and destruction.

The Astrology
We are under the influence of Libra Sun and Mercury’s retrograde (time of review) in Libra. Mercury is the star of conflict (which we are presently experiencing) and Libra, involved in economics, seeks balance between polarities (one voice between Democrats and Republicans). Mercury is Ray 4, the ray of Harmony Through Conflict & Chaos. Out of this chaos there will be harmony, but we don’t know that pathways to harmony yet, nor what that “harmony will look like.
Opportunity Through Suffering: Harmony Through Conflict, Crisis & Chaos (Ray 4)
Some readers are responding to my writing about the present crisis, chaos, conflict and suffering by overriding it - saying that this is, instead, a time of opportunity. Yes, it is a time of new opportunity and growth. But what is not acknowledged (or accepted) is that opportunity and growth for humanity on Earth comes through (after) crisis, chaos, suffering and sacrifice. Humanity functions under the 4th Ray of Harmony Through Conflict and under the Seven Laws of the Soul or Group Life (humanity is a group called the World Disciple). The 1st Law of the Soul is the Law of Sacrifice, the outcomes of which are salvage and salvation and the relinquishing of gain. The suffering humanity is experiencing isn’t simply humanity’s suffering. It is the suffering of the Planetary Logos (Sanat Kumara), the life of whom we participate and live within. The Planetary Logos at this time is attempting to take the 2nd cosmic Initiation. It is a most difficult process. We are therefore participating in his Initiatory process. This is the “suffering.” And the inner causal reasons for the “reorientation.”
From the Tibetan: “Through the effect of the energy flowing from the zodiacal signs man (humanity - man means “thinker”) is prepared for the "crisis of (re)orientation" wherein s/he slowly and gradually reverses his mode of progress upon the wheel of life and begins consciously to travel back to his (spiritual) source….During this process the mental principle, the discriminating mind, is developed and in this specific connection the emphasis is laid upon the influence of Aries, Gemini and Libra. Under that influence the man learns to overcome desire through experiment with and experience of every kind of desire and selfish impulse. The Real News
Is everyone watching the critically intelligent Jon Stewart Daily Show & the Colbert Report, where the “real” news is? Barack Obama’s mantram was, “It’s time for us to change America!” That change has arrived. However, amidst the economic crisis, the presidential elections seem like an afterthought.
Studying the U.S. Chart During These Times
During these “upended economic times” astrologers are studying the U.S. chart. Monday, October 6th & Saturday, October 25th, transiting Mercury conjuncts (passes over) the U.S. Saturn (discipline, restrictions, restructure) at 14:47 degrees Libra. Saturn is the midpoint between the U.S. Pluto & Venus (both signifying money and transformation, debt and power struggles). Also, most important, Mercury was on the U.S. Saturn and at this 14.47 Libra degree when the world trade centers were destroyed (9/11). In terms of the present financial crisis, we could consider that the 9/11 firestorm (metaphor) has moved from the towers (financial center) to the economic sphere (Wall St.). It’s important to observe what occurs in the U.S. before, during and after these two significant dates.
A Libra Response
President Clinton (always inspiring confidence) stated last week that something must be done to put liquidity into the frozen markets or our economy will collapse. Clinton (seven planets, asteroids & rising in Libra) reminds us we must step away from blame, not create the polarity of them (bad) and us (good) and with one voice create a financial plan that may or may not work – but at least we must try. This reflects the present task for humanity under Libra, sign of crisis and choice, and Libra’s Soul-directed seed-thought, “I choose the way that leads between the two great lines of force.” Clinton summons all of us to Right Action, Right Relations and to think and proceed with humility.
Pluto in Capricorn
No one knows where this financial crisis will lead us (though esotericists know it is the beginning of the reorientation from materialism to a more spiritual focus – the new materialism of sharing). The breakdown is leading up to re-entrance of Pluto into Capricorn November 27th. Pluto in Capricorn, in the economic breakdown, is simply doing its transforming work for humanity’s evolution. However, we’ve never been in this situation before and therefore have no rulebook. The experts are doing the best they can to handle and contain the crisis but they don’t know the new rules either. As goods are quickly rising in price the dollar’s value is plummeting. Each household needs to stock up on water, staples, and on-perishable food. And this must begin now.
From the Tibetan: The Cause of World Catastrophe
In June, 1942, the Tibetan, through Alice Bailey, gave the following teachings to his disciples. Although presented over sixty-six years ago (to the Hierarchy, one year is barely a spiritual minute), the information below is still applicable (especially in terms of glamour, greed, selfishness & materialism) for the spiritual work to be undertaken and resting upon the shoulders of humanity (the world disciple) & the United Nations has not yet been accomplished. We are now in another world catastrophe, this one centered in the region of our national and global economies.

The Cause of the World Catastrophe
June 1942 (in the midst of WWII)
We come now to the consideration of the present acute situation and world catastrophe, which is rooted in world glamour, and (we) will study the possibility of relief and cure. This possibility exists and is centered in the two great Avatars, the Buddha and the Christ.
It is difficult to write clearly about this matter of world glamour (emotional distortions) (This message appears in the book Glamour: A World Problem. It is included here to preserve the historical sequence of the teaching in relation to world events.) because we are in the midst of its most concentrated expression (WWII) - the worst the world has ever seen because glamour, incident to centuries of greed and selfishness, of aggression and materialism, has been focused in a triplicity of nations. It is, therefore, easily to be seen and most effective in manifestation.
Three nations express the three aspects of world glamour (illusion, glamour and maya) in an amazing manner, and their powerful assault upon the [355] consciousness of humanity is dependent not only upon the response of Germany, Japan and Italy to this ancient miasma but also upon the fact that every nation - the United Nations as well as the Totalitarian Nations - are tainted with this universal condition. The freedom of the world is consequently largely dependent upon those people in every nation who (within themselves) have moved forward out of one or other of these "glamorous illusions of mayavic impressions" of the human soul into a state of awareness wherein they can see the conflict in its wider terms, i.e., as that existing for them between the Dweller on the Threshold and the Angel of the Presence.
Humanity is today (and has been for ages) battling illusion (mental distortions), glamour (emotional distortions) and maya (distortions of belief). Advanced thinkers, those upon the Probationary Path, upon the Path of Discipleship, and the Path of Initiation have reached the point where materialism and spirituality, the Dweller on the Threshold and the Angel of the Presence, and the basic dualism of manifestation can be seen clearly defined. Because of this clarity of demarcation, the issues underlying present world events, the objectives of the present worldwide struggle, the modes and methods of re-establishing the spiritual contact so prevalent in Atlantean days and so long lost, and the recognition of the techniques which can bring in the new world era and its cultural order can be clearly noted and appraised.
These people are the aspirants, the disciples and the initiates of the world. They are aware of the dualism, the essential dualism, of the conflict and are not so pre-eminently conscious of the threefold nature and the differentiated condition of the situation which underlies the realized dualism. Their approach to the problem is therefore simpler and, because of this, world direction lies largely in their hands at this time. The work being done by those who see the world stage as the arena for the conflict between the Dweller on the Threshold and the Angel of the Presence might be itemized as follows:
• The producing of those world conditions in which the Forces of Light can overcome the Forces of Evil. This they do by the weight of their armed forces, plus their clear insight.
• The educating of humanity in the distinction between Spirituality and materialism, pointing to the differing goals of the combatant forces.
• Sharing and greed, outlining a future world wherein The Four Freedoms will be dominant and all will have that which is needed for right living-processes.
• Light and dark, demonstrating the difference between an illumined future of liberty and opportunity and the dark future of slavery.
• Fellowship and separation, indicating a world order where racial hatreds, caste distinctions and religious differences will form no barrier to international...
• The whole and the part, pointing to the time which is approaching (under the evolutionary urge of spirit) wherein the part or the point of life assumes its responsibility for the whole, and the whole exists for the good of the part. The dark aspect has been brought about by ages of glamour. The light is being emphasized and made clear by the world aspirants and disciples who by their attitudes, their actions, their writings and their utterances are bringing the light into dark places.
3. Preparing the way for the three spiritual energies which will sweep humanity into an era of comprehension, leading [358] to a focused mental clarification of men's minds throughout the world. These three imminent energies are:
• The energy of the intuition which will gradually dispel world illusion, and produce automatically a great augmentation of the ranks of initiates.
• The activity of light which will dissipate, by the energy of illumination, the world of glamour and bring many thousands on to the Path of Discipleship.
• The energy of inspiration which will bring about, through the medium of its sweeping potency, the devitalization or the removal, as by a wind, of the attractive power of maya or substance. This will release untold thousands on to the Path of Probation.
4. Releasing new life into the planet through the medium of every possible agency. The first step towards this release is the proving that the power of materialism is broken (by the defeat of the Axis powers)… and, secondly, by the ability of the United Nations to demonstrate the potency of the spiritual values by their constructive undertakings to restore world order and to lay those foundations which will guarantee a better and more spiritual way of life. These constructive attitudes and undertakings must be assumed individually by every person, and by nations as collective wholes. The first is being undertaken at this time. The second remains as yet to be done.
5. Bringing home to the nations of the world the truths taught by the Buddha, the Lord of Light, and the Christ, the Lord of Love. In this connection it might be pointed out that basically:
• The Axis nations need to grasp the teaching of the Buddha as He enunciated it in the Four Noble Truths; they need to realize that the cause of all sorrow and woe is desire - desire for that which is material.
• The United Nations need to learn to apply the Law of Love as enunciated in the life of Christ and to express the truth that "no man liveth unto himself" and no [359] nation either, and that the goal of all human effort is loving understanding, prompted by a program of love for the whole.
If the lives and teachings of these two great Avatars (Buddha & Christ, two Brothers, one of Wisdom & the other of Love/Wisdom & Will) can be comprehended and wrought out anew in the lives of men today, in the world of human affairs, in the realm of human thinking and in the arena of daily living, the present world order (which is today largely disorder) can be so modified and changed that a new world and a new race of men can gradually come into being. Renunciation and the use of the sacrificial will should be the keynote for the interim period after the war… to the inauguration of the New Age.
The week: There are interesting and different festivals this week: Thursday is the United Nations International Day of Non-Violence. Saturday is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, communicator with the animal and bird kingdoms. And Sunday is United Nations World Teachers Day.
During Thursday’s Scorpio Moon, two of Scorpio’s rulers, Mars & Pluto, sextile (a friendly aspect). Scorpio energies on Thursday are pronounced and definite. Thursday night, void-of-course (v/c), is the debate between the vice-presidential candidates, Biden and Palin. It should be interesting as it’s v/c from Thursday afternoon at 3:46 pm till Friday morning when Sag Moon begins at 8:14 am.
Late Friday evening Mars enters Scorpio. We remember that Mars, the personality and Soul ruler of Scorpio, brings us the Nine tests, three tests on each level of the personality – physical, emotional, & lower mental. These are the tests that decide our readiness for Discipleship.
Saturday Mercury trines Chiron. We will speak about what hurts and recognize and create ways to heal. Sunday Venus in Scorpio sextiles Jupiter in Capricorn. Passion becomes practical and disciples lean toward Initiation. Sunday evening is v/c from 6:08 pm till 8:48 pm when Capricorn Moon begins. We shift from increased goals to focused discipline.
Monday the Sun in Libra aspects Jupiter and then Mercury. The Sun and Mercury are very close, which occurs during Mercury retrograde. A message given to humanity from Mercury, messenger of the Gods. Tuesday could be very strict. We are very busy with finances and constrained about spending money. Relationships may whirl about around 3:00 pm. Careful with wounding anyone. A v/c beginning at 12:37 pm (lunchtime), lasts Tuesday afternoon, evening and through the night.
The v/c is not over until Wednesday morning at 9:03 am when the Moon enters Aquarius. Although we’ll seek independence and freedom from restriction, the afternoon will be difficult, calling us to task concerning our health. Wednesday evening, the first night of Yom Kippur, is more harmonious.
Thursday is the first day of Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year.
Music I would like to listen to: “Notes on Light” by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. Especially if played by cellist Anssi Karttunen; Mozart’s Clarinet concerto ("second iteration of the main theme of the Adagio"), played by clarinetist Kari Kriikku; last week (of September) at Carnegie Hall - Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Orchestra playing Bernstein with Yo-Yo Ma as cellist.
Our task: We must release the essence from its form. The Father of Essence is the Sun; the Wind carries this essence to the Earth who is the Mother.
A question: Weather news: the solar wind has been losing power. In esoteric terms, what is the solar wind?
